If your laptop or desktop features an eSATA port, then you can take advantage of it and connect your external drive to the eSATA port for faster data access, when compared to USB. But the standard eSATA enclosures are way costlier. This hack tells you, how to convert your existing USB enclosure to eSATA enclosure by spending less thanĀ $3.00. All you need is anĀ eSATA to SATA data cable and SATA power extension cable and of course your 2.5″ USB enclosure, if you don’t have one, you can get one like this for only $6.00 + free shipping.

Steps are obvious, hook up the eSATA to SATA data cable to the hard drive and the power cable connects the regular USB enclosure to the hard drive. The idea is to use you 2.5″ USB enclosure to power the Drive and then connect the data port to eSATA port for super fast connectivity. That is all, you have a make shift eSATA enclosure for less than $10. If you are industrious enough you can extend your existing enclosure to hide the power cable inside the enclosure itself or make a new external case on your own. I am including an image to help you out with the connections. Let me know if you have any questions.
