You do not need Adobe Acrobat to convert a document (word to pdf, excel to pdf, text to pdf, html to pdf, web-page etc.) to pdf. CutePDF is a utility exactly for this purpose. Just install the converter (which is just the ghostscript utility), and then install the CuteWriter. This would add a pdf printer in your printer list.

Next time you need to convert a document to pdf, just hit the print button from File menu and select CutePDF Writer as your printer and click on print. It would ask you for the name for the pdf document and once the conversion finishes you have your document converted to pdf. Easy and free.
