Unlike Windows 7 Media Center application, which only supports closed captions on Live TV (out of the box), MythTV not only supports closed captions (CC) for the Live TV, but it also supports subtitle display for most video formats out of the box (all you need is the subtitle file in the same folder as the video file, be it .srt or .sub type file). Use it is very simple. For the CC on Live TV to work you just need to choose the correct TV format (NTSC in the example shown below) and in the VBI format option choose corresponding Closed Caption option in the MythTV backend setup as shown below.

After which you can choose between available different closed captions or subtitle by pressing the button “T”, on the keyboard. If your media center remote has a “CC” or “Subtitle” button, you can map it to spit out “T” when pressed by adding the following line of code in your “mythtv” file located inside the ~/.lirc folder, if you don’t have it already, then read how to generate it here, along with other details regarding the setup.

 remote = *
 prog = mythtv
 button = Teletext
 config = T
 repeat = 0
 delay = 0

You might have to replace the “button = “ option according to the name of the key you want to assign the CC function to. Again read the link above for detailed setup instructions.
