There are several video transcoding softwares available online and among the ones I have used, I have found Handbrake to be the best. Handbrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multithreaded, multiplatform video transcoder–you can use it on Mac, Windows and Linux. The conversion is quite fast–around 30 minutes for a full-feature film (around 1.5-3 GB) and the interface is very easy to use. Just open Handbrake, browse for your DVD source and get started on transcoding. The output is in MPEG-4 which can be played using Windows Media Player or QuickTime. You can use any standard DivX encoder to convert your Handbrake output to a .avi file. Here are some screenshots for the software on Macintosh:

Then click on Start–this completes the process for you; Handbrake does the rest.
