Support for 7-zip files can be added to Ubuntu (11.04, 10.10, 10.04 etc) by installing the following packages

sudo apt-get install p7zip

if you want to get the support for rar files in addition, you should do the following

sudo apt-get install p7zip p7zip-rar

Now you can use the regular archive manager to view / extract 7-zip as well as rar files.
