Install XBMC on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx with Support for IR Remote
XBMC is a powerful HTPC software that lets you transform your PC in to a multimedia home theater system. You can install it on Ubuntu 10.04 by running the following commands successively from the terminal.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install xbmc xbmc-standalone
XBMC supports UPnP portocal that can be used to stream multimedia content from Windows computers with ease. Launch XBMC from the Applications > Sound & Video > XBMC Media Center
Now for the IR remote support for Media Center Remotes that you have been using with Windows you just need to install lirc, make sure that you IR remote’s receiver is disconnected and run this at the terminal
sudo apt-get install lirc
When prompted for the Remote control configuration, choose Windows Media Center Transceivers/Remotes (all) using up/down keys and use tab to navigate to ok and press enter, for the IR Transmitter select none and press enter to continue. Now hook up the IR Remote and basic key functionality should work for your Windows Media Center Remote.
