After you have installed Compiz Fusion and Emerald or even if you are not using Emerald and prefer Metacity, you can perk up your desktop real estate by installing addition themes from Bisigi Project.
To do so run the following commands at a terminal
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bisigi/ppa && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bisigi-themes community-themes gnome-backgrounds gnome-colors gnome-themes gnome-themes-extras gnome-themes-more metacity-themes shiki-colors
Let the installation finish it would take a short while and occupy nearly 399 MB space. You would be prompted during the installation to choose the resolution for your wallpapers, select the one corresponding to your screen’s resolution.

Choose / change your themes for icons, emerald, metacity etc from their corresponding installer or configuration utility.
