HandBrake is a popular cross platform open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows. It is not available via regular Ubuntu repositories. But you can install its snapshots via ppa without the hassle of compiling it from the source, which is certainly requires more effort.

First enable support for DVD playback if you haven’t done so already!

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/
Now add the PPA repository for handbrake
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stebbins/handbrake-snapshots

Update the list of packages by doing

sudo apt-get update

Finally install it by doing

sudo apt-get install handbrake-gtk handbrake-cli

you can remove handbrake-cli from the command above, if you don’t intemd to use the command line interface for HandBrake.
