VirtualBox 4.0.4 is not fully compatible for Ubuntu 11.04 Natty as guest OS. The problem is in compiling the guest additions, which fails and therefore one can’t get 3D acceleration support for the guest OS. Solution lies in two steps:

1. You need to upgrade your VirtualBox installation in the Host OS (Windows host users can download VirtualBox 4.0.8 from the website, Ubuntu host users can upgrade it using the approach given here).

2. Install dkms by doing

sudo apt-get install dkms

Now install the guest additions using the usual approach and this time the driver modules should compile fine. If you want you can enable 3D support from the virtual machines display settings and with this you should be able to enjoy the Unity desktop within VirtualBox.

To get some additional features don’t forget to install VirtualBox 4.0.8 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack All platforms.
