Somebody out there might need this. Here is a step by step guide to Windows 7 on an empty hard disk or after wiping out everything on your computer. Sometimes wiping everything on your disk might be essential, typically if you are moving from an older Windows system to a new machine or just if you want to speed up your system performance by starting afresh.

Lets start then, put your Windows 7 installation disk in to the drive and restart your computer. You would need to make sure that your computer is set to boot from your DVD drive (you can select device to boot by pressing F12 or some such key). If not then kit the key needed to enter bios setup, and then go to the section which says Boot Order, and then move your DVD drive to the top.

Once you see the message Press any key to boot from the DVD…. hit any key to launch the Windows 7 installer.

Wait till the Install Windows shows up, click next to continue

Once you click on the start button. Windows setup would start

Accept the license terms by ticking the box and click next to continue.

Since we are going to do a clean setup, choose the Custom (advanced)

If you are starting with an empty disk you would see something similar to shown in image above. If not you might have to click on Drive options (advanced) to delete or format the partition on which you are going to install Windows. Here, I am just going to create a new partition using the entire disk space for windows installation.

I clicked on the New and then entered the full hard drive size to create new partition for Windows 7, you can choose to create more partitions, using the same approach. Click OK to acknowledge Windows additional partition creation dialog box.

Now select partition on which you want to install Windows and click next.

Let the windows installation to get over.

Windows would restart to continue with the installation (don’t hit any key, else it would again boot from the DVD)

Now you would be asked to add users for the current installation, add the user name and computer name here

Enter product key at this stage or you can choose to enter it later as well, via control panel > system

Use recommended settings when asked for updates, it is advisable to install updates regularly to keep your computer trouble free.

Select time zone now.

Select network type for your connection, whether it is your home, office etc.

Thats it!
