You can use your iPad / iPod Touch / iPhone to make free phone calls in USA and Canada or make very cheap international calls via your conventional landline or cell phone (calls are redirected and you don’t have to carry ipod / ipad around) with VoiceCentral Black Swan which acts as a “middleware” to facilitate the use of your Google Voice Account. Requirements are:

  • An existing Google Voice account.
  • An iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running version 3.0 software or higher.

It is very convenient to use, once setup. Setup is also very simple. Just point your browser to http://voicecentral.riverturn.com/ in Safari on your iPad / iPod Touch / iPhone and click on Download Free Version to continue. You would be asked to provide your name and an email address. The website would then create a launcher for this web application. Once you have installed it by creating the shortcut on your screen, you would just need to login to it with your Google Voice user account.

It makes your Google Voice contact list available to you and also offers a convenient keypad for direct dialling of numbers which are not in your contact list.

It allows you to choose your device to place your call with, for example, if you choose to use your land-line number for placing the call, it would first call your land-line number, once you answer it, the destination number would be dialled and thus you won’t have to continue using your iPod or iPad all the time and you can use the conventional phone to continue with your call. This makes this app very useful. My landline does not have long distance calling feature, but now with Google Voice + Black Swan I can even place long distance calls. You can also control the basic settings of your Google Voice account from with this software. Go ahead and try it, it doesn’t cost your a thing anyway!

You should clarify that this doesn’t actually allow one to make calls from an iPod. Instead, it simply rings a home phone or cell phone, which has to be answered in order to complete the call. If I am close enough to a phone of my own to answer it(required here), why on earth would I want to hassle with initiating the call on the iPod? This seems like technology better suited for the old days when lon distance was expensive. Weird app.

That’s written clearly on the first line itself (via land line or cell phone). It is very convenient for making international calls, and long distance calls too at least for me as my land line doesn’t have long distance calling. 🙂 For everything else Skype has been there since ages. 🙂
