Incidentally, lifehacker cannot afford mac, but babyhacker can! So, here is the list of useful applications for mac users. These apps work well in snow leopard and work just the same way for leopard or tiger users.

1. Anxiety (freeware) – Its a lightweight to-do manager and allows you to sync your to-do list in ical and mail as well. It is useful for people who plan their day or people like me who keep forgetting what needs to be done amid all the mess.

2. Appcleaner (freeware) – Uninstalling applications in mac has always been very straight forward, you drag the app into trash and its done! But some apps do leave unwanted litter behind. Appcleaner is a wonderful way of cleanly removing apps. You drag the app that you need to uninstall in Appcleaner and you are done!

3. CoverSutra ($19.95) – Its a handy iTunes controller. It lets you control the playback and search music in the iTunes library. It has an elegant album art and player control user interface.

Although it is not freeware you can install the 30 day trial version. After the trial period expires, it still keeps working with complete functionality, just that you cannot run it continuously for more than 4 hours. Once it terminates after 4 hours of continuous use, just relaunch it and you are good for another 4 hours! Your iTunes experience will change forever with this app. For online FM listeners, this app has integrated last.fm as well. So now you can control your local library as well as internet radio in just one app.

4. Fetch ($ 29) – It is a FTP and SFTP client for mac os (Snow Leopard, leopard, tiger). It is easy to use and very light application. Most places have license for it as it is almost universally used mac FTP client. Education licenses are free and can be requested from the Fetch website.

There is a dashboard widget for it as well.

5. Gimp (freeware) – I don’t need to emphasize the importance of GIMP. Though it doesn’t run natively on mac, it is a must have for all image editing. Its simply the best image editing freeware out there.

Seashore is an opensource image editor running natively on mac. It is based around the GIMP’s technology and uses the same native file format. For people touchy about apps running natively, and even otherwise, this is equivalent of GIMP for mac.

6. MacJournal ($39.95) – People who have used it once, swear by it. Its the best journal/diary software I know of. Using it is a very enjoyable experience. It does something to you and you feel like to keep writing forever (blah blah …..). Its kind of costly, so I had to get it from other sources. 😀 The bottom line is get hold of it any how and use it for once, you won’t regret it.

7. iStat (freeware) – Amazing app for keeping an eye on the vital stats of the mac like CPU, hard disk, GPU temperatures, hard drive and CPU usage, etc. It comes in three packages:

(a) iStat Menu – It sits in the menu bar and displays temperatures, network bandwidth, memory, hard disk and CPU usage. You can click on individual items to access detailed information.

(b) iStat Pro – This is dashboard widget providing all the information at a glance. It is one of the highest rated mac apps and widget, for both its usefulness and appeal. iStat Nano is a diet version of this.

8. UNRarX (freeware) – To extract .rar compressed files on a mac.

9. Skype and Yahoo Messenger (freeware) – IM clients.

10. VLC media Player (freeware) – Its a cross platform multimedia player. It is capable of reading most audio and video formats (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, DivX, MPEG-1, mp3, ogg, aac …) as well as DVDs, Audio CDs VCDs, and various streaming protocols.

Thats all for now, I will keep adding to the list. Your suggestions to the list are welcome.
