To enable the support for .rar archive files, you need to install a package called “unrar” which is only available though the RPMFusion repository. To enable this repository first, paste the following in a terminal while being root (type su at command prompt), however if you have enabled it already then you can skip to next step!

rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm

Install unrar by doing this while being root

yum install unrar

Follow the prompts by answering “y” to finish the installation. You should now be able to extract or create rar files using the standard archive manager.

Strictly speaking, it’s the nonfree repository that contains the unrar RPM, given it doesn’t meet the definition of free software. Fortunately, all unrar does is allow us to extract data people send us in this proprietary format, we’re not compressing things with it ourselves 🙂
