How to View your Webcam on iPod Touch / iPhone / iPad
If you have an iPod / iPad / iPhone you can turn it in to a handheld video monitor which can be used as a baby monitor or for surveillance or other security purposes. The setup is very simple (you just need a working webcam and a couple of free / inexpensive software) and it would not cost you a bunch.
Step 1: Ensure that you webcam is plugged in and works normally with other software (Yahoo, Skype etc.). Now download and install webcamXP, this software is free for personal use. Once you launch it and choose the free use option, you can choose a video device which you want webcamXP to use by right clicking anywhere and then selecting the appropriate webcam from PCI/USB option. Now go to Web / Broadcast tab and run the web server if it isn’t running already, you can stop it to change the port number for the server. Remember you can password protect your webcam in free version, so use this software only over LAN, if you need to access the streamed cam from outside your LAN, then you might want to consider purchasing the full version.
webcamXP also lets you see your webcam in a web browser, just have to type the ip_address:port_no in the browser address bar.
Step 2: Purchase Live Cam or Live Cam HD (for iPad) from iTunes store (currently available for $0.99) and configure it to work for WebcamXP server that you setup in the first step. You just need to specify the ip address and the port number on which you started the server (default is 8080). The streaming quality depends on the webcam quality. I get very good live streams on my iPod Touch with my HD webcam over the LAN.
