If you bought a new hard drive and want to do a fresh install or need to install same set of packages on several machines, then installing all the packages one by one can be a big hassle if you try installing them manually. Transferring already installed packages from the current computer to a new computer or a new hard drive is very simple in Linux. We won’t transfer all the applications, we just need to transfer the list of packages installed to the other machine or drive using suitable means like a USB drive or just by scp or sftp. The procedure is explained below

Step 1: First prepare and export the list of already installed packages by doing this at a terminal prompt
dpkg --get-selections > installed-packages.log
This is going to spit out a file called “installed-packages.log”, you would need this file on your new machine, so copy it to the new machine.

Step 2: On the new machine, first enable all the additional repositories that you used on your previous installation or machine. Then just run the commands given below at a terminal prompt (I am assuming that you are running this command in the directory where you have copied the “installed-packages.log” file.
sudo apt-get update
sudo dpkg --set-selections < installed-packages.log
sudo apt-get -u dselect-upgrade

Depending on the number of packages you had installed on your previous machine, you might need to grab a coffee or something, as installing all the packages may take more than a short while.
