If you download TV media (series) from the Internet, the episode numbers are all mangled and messed up. But you don’t need to worry, there are several applications for all platforms which can fix the episode names automatically for you. I tested couple of these solutions which are discussed below.

FileBot appears like a feature packed file renaming utility which also happens to be platform dependent. It has much more to offer than just the media renaming feature. It boasts off the following features (taken from their website)

  • A simple user-interface tuned for drag-n-drop
  • Platform-independent and straight-forward application deployment
  • Rename hundreds of media files in a matter of seconds
  • Fetch episode lists from TVRage, AniDB,, IMDb or TheTVDB
  • Highly accurate file / episode matching
  • Series / Anime name auto-detection
  • Powerful and highly customizable episode naming scheme
  • Download subtitles from OpenSubtitles, Subscene, Sublight or SubtitleSource
  • Find exact subtitles on OpenSubtitles

Installation is very simple just download the jar file from their website. And make the file executable by doing this

chmod a+x filename.jar

Now right click and launch it either using OpenJDK (already installed on Ubuntu) or Sun Java (needs installation)

It is a very simple app with limited features. This little Java app provides an interface to select which files (episodes) you want to rename. It then finds the episode title from a tv listing website and renames the files based on that. Currently it can only detect TV series by using the folder name and thus is limited to renaming one set of TV series at a time. Next version promises to offer simultaneous multi-series episode renaming. It does allow for the customization of the renaming format. Installation is identical to that for FileBot, you can download the app from here.
