Ubuntu Tweak lets you look and change whats inside the hood of Ubuntu (or Linux Mint or other Ubuntu derivatives). Basically it provides a nice GU Interface to change settings which are otherwise not that straight forward, thereby allowing a more customized user experience. Installation on Maverick Meerkat is simple, first add the ppa and then install it using apt-get

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

Once the installation is over, you can launch the program from Application > System Tools > Ubuntu Tweak

Ubuntu Tweak provides you with a host of features for tweaking Applications, Startup options, Desktop settings, Personal preferences and System settings. To change settings you would have to click on the Unlock button towards the right hand bottom corner.

Applications: Allows you to install/uninstall applications, manage sources and updates.

Startup: Manage Auto Start Programs, change Login Settings (e.g. change GDM settings background image etc.) and Session related settings.

Desktop: Change basic Compiz settings and Gnome Settings (Enable or disable Recent documents list in Gnome)

Personal Preferences: Change default folder locations, scripts and Shortcut commant, e.g. you can configure Win+e button to launch nautilus, just like in windows Win+e launches windows explorer.

System: Advanced Power Management settings, e.g. choose whether to lock screen on hibernation and suspension, change hostname with ease, edit file-application association and other Nautilus and Security related settings.
