Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat just got launched, so here is the basic install guide to install Ubuntu 10.10 from scratch to create an all Ubuntu machine. The steps involved are simple as usual and illustrated by the screenshots given below, here we have took the Ubuntu RC for a spin, don’t expect it to be change once the full version is released.

Ubuntu Maverick unlike Lucid, if you remember, is a short term support release (supported until April 2012) and features brand new Shotwell Photo Manager to complete the multimedia suit that Ubuntu has to offer. Here are the steps involved in its installation.

Start by downloading the iso from www.ubuntu.com. You can either burn the iso on a CD or just transfer it to a USB drive and not waste a CD by following this very simple procedure discussed here.

Boot your computer with the CD inside your drive or with the USB drive plugged in and set to be the first in the boot order. Once the boot program launches, hit any key to get to this screen, where you choose your language for installer.

In the next step choose to continue with the “Install Ubuntu” option for a default single boot fresh install.

Specify the language for your installation.

Installer checks if the machine meets the installation requirements. If you are connected to internet via ethernet, you would want to hit the Download updates while installing button (this would increase the install time though).

I am sure you would want to have mp3 and Flash support to begin with and without having to do any tinkering, so tick the Install this third-party software box as well before proceeding to next step.

Since we are making installation on a blank disk with no partitions, I chose the Erase and use the entire disk option. You might want to choose the second option, if you want a customized installation.

Once you hit the Install Now button in the screen shown above, installer would start, but you would still have to make a couple of more choices for time zone and then Keyboard Layout and then create / add users.

Add users who would be using the machine.

Hit forward to continue with the installation process.

Once the installation is over, hit the restart button and you should boot right in to you brand new Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat installation.

That is all. Enjoy Ubuntu 10.10.
