VirtualBox 4.0.8 was released on May 16, 2011. If you are still stuck with old version of VirtualBox or if you want to install it for the first time, I would suggest you upgrade or install the latest version by adding the Virtual box repository. VirtualBox 4.0.8 comes with some critical fixes, especially for those who want to install guest additions in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty guest, else the compilation of guest modules fail on VirtualBox 4.0.4 which ships with Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Host.

To install the latest version or to update from previous version or any version of Ubuntu add the following line to your /etc/apt/sources.list file, by doing

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

now, based on your Ubuntu version and whether you had a line similar to one below add / update the corresponding line from the list below and save the above file (Note: VirtualBox has been moved from non-free to contrib with 4.0)

deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian natty contrib
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian maverick contrib non-free
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian lucid contrib non-free
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian karmic contrib non-free
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian hardy contrib non-free
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian squeeze contrib non-free
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian lenny contrib non-free

Now we’ll have to download and update the Oracle public key for apt-secure

wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

Once the key has been imported, run the following command (even if you want to upgrade from older virtual box, this is the command to execute, to be on safer side you can uninstall virtual box 3.x versions before running the following command)

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install virtualbox-4.0

This should install / upgrade your VirtualBox installation to 4.0.8. To add support for USB devices inside the guest OS, you might need to add your username to vboxusers group, you can do that by

sudo adduser your_user_name vboxusers
